Built for Integration Guide

🏛️

Enterprise Ready

Nowdesk fits naturally into Drupal's permission and role model. Deploy site-wide or restrict the widget to specific content types or user roles.

🌐

Multilingual Sites

Works seamlessly with Drupal's built-in multilingual stack. Auto-detect visitor language or pin a language per translation using a URL parameter.

🤖

AI Chatbot After Hours

When staff are unavailable, Nowdesk's AI bot handles FAQs, captures enquiries, and routes complex issues to the right team the next business day.

👤

Authenticated User Pre-fill

Pass Drupal's current user name and email into the chat widget so agents see identity details instantly — no repeated data entry for registered users.

🔒

CSP & Security Compatible

Nowdesk script domains can be added to your Content Security Policy header, keeping Drupal's strict security posture intact while enabling live chat.

⚙️

No Core Modifications

Integration lives entirely in your theme's page.html.twig or a custom block — nothing touches Drupal core or contributed modules.

How to Integrate Nowdesk with Drupal

1

Create a Nowdesk Account

Sign up and complete onboarding. Go to Settings → Miscellaneous → Installation URL and copy your installation URL.

2

Open Your Drupal Theme

In your Drupal admin, go to Appearance and open your active theme. Locate page.html.twig in your theme templates folder.

3

Paste the Embed Scripts

Add the following lines before the closing body tag, replacing [YOUR-SITE-URL] with your installation URL.

<!-- Nowdesk Live Chat -->
<script src="[YOUR-SITE-URL]/js/min/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script id="sbinit" src="[YOUR-SITE-URL]/js/main.js"></script>
4

Clear Cache and Verify

Clear your Drupal cache via Configuration → Performance → Clear all caches, then open your site in an incognito tab to see the chat bubble.

5

Customise the Widget

Return to Nowdesk → Settings to adjust colours, greeting messages, operating hours, and AI chatbot responses.

Common Questions

Nowdesk works with Drupal 8, 9, 10, and 11. The embed uses standard HTML and Twig syntax available across all modern Drupal versions. The Twig variable names for the user object are consistent across Drupal 9 and 10.

If you use a contributed theme, edits to page.html.twig may be overwritten on theme update. To avoid this, create a sub-theme (Drupal's recommended approach) and place your customised page.html.twig there. Alternatively, use the custom block method which requires no theme file edits at all.

Yes. Using the custom block method, set the block visibility to show only for specific roles under Block Layout → Configure → Visibility → Roles. In page.html.twig, you can use Twig conditionals to check user.roles.

Yes. Because the scripts are placed before </body> outside of any Drupal render array, they are not affected by BigPipe's placeholder rendering. The widget loads after the main page content, which is the intended behaviour.

Yes. Each Drupal site in a multisite network can include the embed scripts independently. Use different Nowdesk inboxes per site by pointing each site to a different installation URL or configuring separate widget settings.
